S485: HIV: The Forgotten Epidemic in Splash Fall 2023 (Dec. 02, 2023)
In the early 1980s, doctors in New York and Los Angeles began noticing something strange: young men in their twenties who were previously healthy began developing an extremely rare form of pneumonia from which they would all pass away. It was not for a few years that these doctors and the world identified what was causing these mysterious deaths: the human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV. This class will share the fascinating yet tragic story of HIV with students, with emphasis being placed on the virus’s biology, epidemiology, and pathogenesis. All students with an interest in anything from infectious disease to medicine to stuffed animals are welcome to register for this class! :)

S434: It’s About More Than Just The Sugar: Diabetes 101 in Splash Fall 2022 (Nov. 06, 2022)
This class will introduce students to diabetes, a chronic health condition that impairs about 40 million U.S. adults’ ability to regulate the amount of sugar in their blood. The class will begin with an overview of the biology of diabetes and transition into a discussion of how diabetes affects not only those living with the condition but diabetics’ family members and friends as well. By the end of the class, students will walk away understanding that the effects of diabetes can’t be addressed by putting Hershey’s out of business; it will require the effort of community members, doctors, policymakers, and researchers. All students are welcome to register! (Sorry Hershey’s for picking on you, but your chocolate is a 1).

X436: When The Lemons Don’t Want To Be Made Into Lemonade: A Few Secrets To Happiness in Splash Fall 2022 (Nov. 06, 2022)
There are moments in life when all we want to do is climb into bed, curl up into a ball, and cry at the top of our lungs. It’s moments like these that we wonder if the saying, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade” actually means anything or helps us in any way. Unfortunately, in many cases, it doesn’t. This course will teach students how to be happy when life gets rough and show them how always trying to “make lemonade” may not always be the best strategy toward achieving long-lasting happiness. All students interested in clapping “along if you feel like a room without a roof” are welcome to register for this class! (Pharrell’s a real one) :)
