Brief Biographical Sketch:

Hi! My name is Andy, and I am a graduate student in biomedical engineering at Hopkins from Seattle, Washington.

I graduated from the University of Washington where I majored in microbiology, chemistry, and philosophy. My approach to the classes I offer are giving anyone and everyone a look at the nitty-gritty details of how the physical and biological world are part of our human experience. Throw in a bit of philosophy on top of that, and you'll have a newfound appreciation for the world around you!

S444: An Introduction to Aging in Splash Spring 2023 (Apr. 08, 2023)
This course will introduce some fundamental aspects of what aging is, both from philosophical and biological aspects of where life began all the way to death. It will also look more deeply into why and how humans have been trying to comprehend death from a biological perspective.

S445: Food Science! - An Exploration in Splash Spring 2023 (Apr. 08, 2023)
Food! It's delicious and something that we all enjoy, but why is that? Throughout this class, we will be exploring that fundamental question by looking at a series of case studies about our own bodies, plants, and even the molecular components of what makes food, food! I would suggest leaving some room in your stomach because some of these experiments will involve eating!

S446: The Microbiome and You! in Splash Spring 2023 (Apr. 08, 2023)
Have you ever wondered how and why you get cavities, or why your stomach hurts? What about the other seemingly unexplained things that make your body work? Part of that lies in learning about our microbiome, a wonderful field where we think about the microbes - bacteria, fungi, and even viruses - that help to regulate our human health. So if you're curious to learn more about the little residents that live in your body, come join us for the afternoon!

S403: The Beauty of Water: A Physical, Chemical, and Biological Perspective in Splash Fall 2022 (Nov. 06, 2022)
What is water, and how does the liquid support everything we know? This class will look at the fundamental aspects of what makes water extraordinary through a look at its unique physical and chemical properties, how life adapted around it, and how it may hold the key to understanding the conditions necessary for life out in space.
