E544: F1: Engineering and Design
Difficulty: **
Teachers: Alex Zheng

E545: Siege the Castle: Build Your Own Crossbow Full!
Difficulty: **
Teachers: George Kuo

Step into the shoes of a medieval engineer! In this hands-on class, you and your team will design and build a working mini crossbow from pencils, rubber bands, and simple everyday materials. But this isn’t just a craft project — it’s a mission. Once your crossbow is ready, you’ll march it to the battlefield for a castle siege challenge, where your goal is to burst the balloons guarding the fortress wall.
As you build and test, you’ll uncover the secrets that once gave crossbows the power to change history:
• ⚔️ History: Discover how crossbows revolutionized warfare — from their invention in ancient China, to their role as the “great equalizer” in medieval Europe.
• 🔬 Science: See how energy transforms — stored tension in a rubber band becomes a powerful launch of motion.
• 🛠️ Engineering: Experiment with design tweaks in angle, tension, and stability, and watch how they change your crossbow’s accuracy and power.
It’s history, physics, and engineering rolled into one — with you at the center of the siege. Can your team’s design break through the castle defenses?
